Time for Travel

The situation: Me and my husband of ten years currently find ourselves both unemployed- I, having just earned a Masters in Clinical Counseling, and my husband, having just been let go of his job as a Student Pastor. Yes, a pastor and a therapist.  We have a 22-month-old (that’s almost 2 for those who don’t have kids), Shiloh, and an old grumpy dachshund with separation anxiety named Henry. After purging ourselves of most of our possessions, what we kept now sits in storage. We kept our suitcases filled with whatever would fit, the necessities, and some things to keep Shiloh busy. And her seven necessary stuffed animals. We own a house in Georgia, that is currently being rented out, and two vehicles.

It would be easy to focus on what we don’t have: jobs, savings, income, a place to live… but what we do have is time: a commodity, a friend reminded me, that is quite coveted. So, armed with our suitcases, the vehicle that currently works, and Shiloh’s army of plushies, our family hit the open road. We’ve sensed the concern in people’s voice wondering how we were going to survive, but mostly, as my friend suspected, the envy and almost yearning in others to have the time with their family to do something similar. My advice: don’t wait until you’re unemployed and homeless to make the trip. Do it now! It’s your life and your family and your time to manage. Now, I am the last person to get on the YOLO-train, which is really just an excuse to make poor decisions, but I do firmly believe that we are blessed with one earthly life and we can do something with it, or just live vicariously through our Netflix shows. (And, btw, my hubby and I do love our Netflix!)

So with that, our journey begins. I invite you to follow- I’ll be sharing thoughts, rants, tips, and scenic views. See you down the road!
